College Move-Out in Denton: What to Do With Furniture You Can't Take

By Denton Valor Hauling. Published September 30, 2026. Last reviewed September 30, 2026.

If you can't take it with you, sell or give away what's still usable a few weeks before move-out, drop clothes in a campus donation bin, and book a haul-away for the rest before your deadline. For UNT residence halls, the housing agreement says you have to check out of your room by 5 p.m. on the last day of final exams. On UNT's fall 2026 calendar, that works out to Friday, Dec. 11. The dates below come straight from UNT and TWU, and where we did the math ourselves, we say so.

Know your deadline

UNT residence halls. UNT's 2026–2027 housing license says students must check out of their room by 5 p.m., and out of their residence hall by 7 p.m., on the last day of final exams in the fall and spring semesters, unless Housing approves something else in advance. The registrar lists fall 2026 finals as Dec. 7–11 and spring 2027 finals as May 1–7. Putting the two together (our derivation, not a date UNT publishes on its own), the deadlines land on Friday, Dec. 11, 2026, and Friday, May 7, 2027.

TWU residence halls. TWU says its residence halls and student apartments stay open through the 2026–2027 contract term, August 2026 to May 2027, with reduced services over Thanksgiving, winter break and spring break. Its dates page shows halls operating at reduced services starting at noon on Dec. 11, 2026, and the residence halls closing at noon on May 7, 2027.

Off-campus apartments. Your lease sets the date. Look it up now, not during finals.

What the dorm keeps, and what's yours

At UNT checkout, all the furniture the university provided has to stay in the room, beds unbunked and lowered, with every area clean and free of trash. Residents who skip checkout procedures are charged an improper checkout fee and may owe cleaning or damage charges on top of it. So the futon, rug, mini-fridge and extra shelving you brought are yours to deal with.

Don't just leave them behind. Under UNT's housing license, belongings not reclaimed within 30 days after the agreement term are treated as abandoned property, and UNT can keep them or dispose of them.

Give it a second life first

  • Clothes and textiles: UNT's Dean of Students resource center points students to the Zero Waste Textile Initiative's pink clothing donation bins across campus.
  • Furniture and small appliances: UNT's We Mean Green Fund lists a "Mean Green Campus Move-out" project that lets UNT community members sell or donate belongings so furniture, appliances and clothing get reused. It's listed as an upcoming project, so check with the university whether it's running this term.
  • Friends who are staying in Denton: a futon with one more year in it is better off in someone's living room.

Why the curb isn't an option for most students

If you live in an apartment complex inside Denton, the city's residential bulky-item pickup isn't available to you. The city's rate ordinance says residential collection services aren't available to residents of apartments, dormitories or other multifamily housing units. Ask your property manager what the complex allows before you leave anything by the dumpster.

When to call a hauler

If something's too big to sell in time, we'll carry it out of your room or apartment and haul it off. Text 1–3 photos, tell us the floor and whether there's an elevator, and we'll send a rough quote based on how much truck space it takes. The firm price is confirmed on site before we load anything, and you pay when the job's done.

A few things to know:

  • Book ahead. Same-day service is sometimes possible, but not always. Damon, who runs the company, works fire shifts and has a family, and finals week is a rough time to find out your day is taken.
  • Mattresses are fine, with one exception. We won't take mattresses with severe biohazard contamination or active bed bugs. Our mattress removal page has the details.
  • Go in with your roommates. One pickup for the whole apartment is simpler than three separate ones.

Couches, bed frames, desks and dressers all fall under furniture removal, and if you're emptying a whole unit, apartment cleanouts covers it.

One customer's sectional, for scale:

Highly recommend! Quick, professional, and just a very nice guy. I had a very large sectional and he was loaded and gone in under 30 minutes. I would definitely use again.

Standing discount for active and retired Fire/EMS, law enforcement and military. Mention it when you book.

Amazing business! The pricing for the junk removal was more than fair, and they were actually able to get the junk hauled off the same day.
